Four final year undergraduates from Nanyang Technological University University (NTU) spearheaded Singapore’s first water rights campaign for the right to clean water.
Known as The Blue Right, the campaign was the brainchild of Cheryl Ng Hui Hui, Eileen Seah Li Ling, Joycelyn Yeo Jing Ci and Yu Qinyan, Public and Promotional Communication students from NTU Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.
Targeted at students from Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Management University (SMU), the campaign seeks to highlight the water issues faced by Asia’s developing communities and showcase the developmental efforts of Environmental Endeavour 2, a partnership between the Lien Foundation and NTU.

It aims to drive home the message that access to clean water is a “human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights”, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.

“We wanted to do something meaningful for our Final Year Project. Although water is a basic survival need, many of us tend to overlook its signifcant or take it for granted. From our research, we realised that existing water campaigns in Singapore are generally centred on domestic water issues like water conservation. That
was when we decided to look beyond our shores to the neighbouring communities in Asia which do not even have adequate access to clean water,” says Qinyan.
Tang Zi Jiao Village 塘子脚村 - The living conditions here are the worst out of the 3 project sites that the girls had visited during the trip.
As part of their campaign, the four girls visited rural China and Vietnam in January to document the lives of the rural communities through photos and videos. All these have culminated in a photography exhibition that is taking place across the three universities - NTU, NUS and SMU - in March 2011.

Creation of Singapore's first giant water mosaic painting with 12000 cups of coloured rainwater
The water mosaic below formed a giant picture that conveyed The Blue Right's campaign message. 350 litres of rainwater was collected from January to March and mixed with paint, to create this massive water mosaic painting! Through this, the team wants to highlight the water situation faced by Asia's developing communities, which face an acute shortage of clean water sources and often have to collect rainwater for consumption.
